The 136th running of the Belmont Stakes was held on June 5 2004 in front a record crowd of 120,139 spectators who converged with the hopes of seeing Smarty Jones (#9) become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978. But with just 50 yards to go, the Pennsylvania-bred Smarty Jones gave up the lead, for the first time in his career, to local hero and 36-to-1 longshot, Birdstone (#4). Birdstone, who won by a length in 2:27.50 gave trainer Nick Zito his first Belmont Stakes win after five career second placings.

Smarty Jones won the Kentucky Derby by 2 /34 lengths, becoming thee first unbeaten Derby winner since Seattle Slew in 1977. Trainer John Servis and jockey Stewart Elliott became the first combination in 25 years to win the Derby in their debut appearance. He then went on to win the Preakness Stakes by a record margin of 11½ lengths. Born at Someday Farm in Chester County, Pennsylvania, Smarty Jones became a huge fan favorite in the northeast.
