At the western edge of campus surrounding BU’s Nickerson Field is West Campus, with three high-rises each housing well over 600 residents. Residents of West generally prefer it over other locations and cite its “campusy” feel and proximity to the athletic facilities. Student athletes are abundant here, for that reason.

The original Nickerson Field was in Weston, but when the commonwealth of Massachusetts decided to build Route 128 straight through it, BU was forced to shop for a new ballfield. When the National League's Boston Braves, who until 1953 played on a field between Harry Agganis Way and Babcock Street, moved to Milwaukee in 1954, BU bought the ballpark, giving it a home field, on the Charles River Campus. It was named Nickerson Field as well, after William E. Nickerson, an MIT graduate who was the principal inventor of the machinery used to manufacture the first Gillette safety razor.

Cinergy Field, formerly known as Riverfront Stadium, was the home of the Cincinnati Reds and the Cincinnati Bengals. Located on the Ohio River in downtown Cincinnati, Riverfront Stadium was the 3rd of the National League’s infamous "cookie-cutter" stadiums. It was the first stadium to have its entire field covered by Astroturf, except for the cutouts around the bases and pitcher’s mound.

Before Riverfront Stadium opened on June 30, 1970, the Reds had spent 58 years playing at intimate Crosley Field. In 1997, Cinergy Corporation, a Cincinnati based utility, reached an agreement with the Reds to rename the stadium. When the Bengals moved to Paul Brown Stadium, Riverfront was reconfigured as a basbeall only stadium. Cinergy Field was demolished in 2000 to make way for the Great American Ballpark.

Giants Stadium, also called The Meadowlands, is the home stadium for the New York Giants and New York Jets NFL football teams, and Red Bull New York (formerly MetroStars) of MLS. It is located in East Rutherford, NJ as part of the Meadowlands Sports Complex, which also hosts the Meadowlands Racetrack and the Continental Airlines Arena. Official seating capacity as of 2004 is 80,242, making Giants Stadium the second largest stadium in the NFL behind FedEx Field. Giants Stadium was the first major league sporting venue in New Jersey.

Giants Stadium opened October 10, 1976, as 76,042 fans witnessed a loss by the Giants to the Dallas Cowboys. College football made its debut at Giants Stadium October 23, 1976, with Rutgers University defeating Columbia University, 47-0.
In 1984, the New York Jets became co-tenants with the Giants. While the stadium has a decidedly blue atmosphere, matching the Giants' team colors, when the Jets play there, the walls are covered with green banners, matching their colors.

The New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League moved to Giants Stadium for the 1977 season and remained until the league folded in 1985. Soccer legend Pelé played his last game here October 1, 1977, playing the first half for the Cosmos and the second half for his old Brazilian team, Santos.

Other professional football teams that have called Giants Stadium home over the years include the New Jersey Generals of the United States Football League; the New York/New Jersey Knights of the World League of American Football; and the New York/New Jersey Hitmen of the XFL. The stadium has also hosted numerous college football games, including the Garden State Bowl from 1978-1981; Kickoff Classic from 1983 to 2002; the New York Urban League Classic since 1981; several Notre Dame-Navy and Notre Dame-Army games; and the Army-Navy Game on three occasions, most recently in 2002.

Nine games of the 1994 FIFA World Cup soccer tournament were held at Giants Stadium (including one semifinal), along with several games of the 1999 Women's World Cup. The largest crowd to ever attend an event at Giants Stadium was 82,948, as Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass during a rainstorm on October 5, 1995. Performers ranging from Bruce Springsteen to the Grateful Dead to The Rolling Stones to Bon Jovi have played Giants STadium. The majority of the Paradise City music video by Guns N' Roses was filmed at the stadium in 1988. For some years a rumor circulated that the remains of Jimmy Hoffa had been buried under one of the end zones at Giants Stadium.
