When Pepsi-Cola erected its big red neon sign in Long Island City, along the Queens side of the East River, in 1936, ships would steam up to the plant below it and unload sacks of sugar from Havana. Soda hasn't been bottled there for years and the plant was torn down in 2004 to make way for a high-rise apartment complex. So the sign--unofficial landmark and longtime beacon to local residents, film location scouts, and drunken taxicab passengers on the F.D.R. Drive--had to move, migrating letter by letter, from the plant's roof to a site on the ground, three hundred feet to the south.

Citicorp Building is a 658-foot (201m), 50-story office tower in Long Island City. Completed in 1990 by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP for the bank Citigroup, the tower is the tallest building on Long Island and tallest in New York City outside Manhattan. The only building in the US outside a central business district which is taller is the Williams Tower in Houston. Also known as One Court Square, the tower is glass-wrapped and green tinted and can accomodate 3500 employees.
The Queensboro Bridge, commonly called the "59th Street Bridge", was the world's greatest cantilever bridge at the time of its construction in 1909. For more info on the bridge, see this picture
The Queensboro Bridge was designated a landmark by the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1974.

Since opening the first studio in what was the former flour silo room of Long Island City's landmark Silvercup Bakery in 1983, Silvercup Studios has been the largest film and television production facility in New York City.
Silvercup's Studios has served as currently home to HBO's The Sopranos and Sex and the City, NBC Universal/Broadway Video Television's 30 Rock and ABC/Touchstone's two new shows Knights of Prosperity and Six Degrees. The facility has also hosted QVC's home shopping channel, Q2, which broadcast live, 18 hours per day. Over 400 hundred commercials are produced annually including campaigns for Wendy's, Olive Garden, Old Navy, Victoria's Secret, The Gap, Verizon and MCI. Among the feature films which have been shot at Silvercup are The Devil Wears Prada, Little Children, Meet the Parents, Analyze That, Big Daddy, Little Nicky, Gangs of New York, Mickey Blue Eyes with Hugh Grant, Changing Lanes, Mr. Deeds, Hide & Seek, Stay, and the Night Listener.
Silvercup Studios also provides facilities for still photography including shoots for fashion magazines such as Vogue, Elle, Mirabella as well as The Source and XXL. Annie Liebowitz's famous cover shot for Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA album was shot here. Many music videos have been produced and shot at the studio for artists such as Beyonce, Madonna, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Billy Joel, Bon Jovi, Limp Bizkit, George Michael, Nine Inch Nails, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake.
The complex comprises a total of 13 shooting stages on its Main Lot (Roof and Loft spaces are also available) located at 42-22 22nd Street in Long Island City, ranging in size from 3,000 to 18,000 ft2 and five 16,000 ft2 studios and one 9,400 ft2 (each with grid heights of 28') on its East Lot which is located at 34-02 Starr Avenue, in Long Island City.

The shorter 221 foot tall building to the left of the CitiCorp Building, Court Square Two, was built by Kohn, Pedersen, Fox, also for CitiCorp. A topping off ceremony was held in mid-October 2006. The building is structured to handle the addition of approximately 20 floors.
