Barboursville, located within the property of Barboursville Vineyards, is the ruin mansion of James Barbour, a former U.S. Senator, U.S. Secretary of War, and Virginia Governor. The Neo-Palladian style home was built in 1822 from plans by Thomas Jefferson, president of the United States and Barbour's friend and political ally. The house burned in an Christmas Day fire in 1884, leaving only the brick he exterior brick walls, the interior masonry partitions, and the columns of the porticoes. Today the ruins stand as a tourist attraction and a backdrop for Four County Players productions of "Shakespeare at the Ruins" in August.

Barboursville Vineyards, founded in 1976 by Gianni Zonin, an Italian winemaker from Veneto, was built on the grounds of Barboursville, the home of the 19th Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, James Barbour. The estate is the first producer in the new era of Virginian wine history to plant Vitis vinifera since the failed attempts of Jefferson, initially through former vineyard manager Gabriele Rausse. The viticultural area extends 120 acres and the are predominantly Bordeaux grape varieties for the red wines, and also including Nebbiolo, Sangiovese and Barbera, and among white varieties are Viognier, Chardonnay, Pinot grigio and Sauvignon blanc.
