This Glenn H. Curtiss Memorial Flagpole at Champlin Beach is dedicated in memory of Glenn H. Curtiss, born Hammondsport 1878, who designed and flew the pioneer-era aircraft June Bug (or Aerodrome #3). On July 4, 1908 he flew it flew 5,080 ft (1,550 m) to win the Scientific American Trophy. His success led to the formation of the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company, which later merged into the Curtiss-Wright Corporation.
