Sisal is a seaport town in Hunucmá Municaplity, about 53 km northwest of Mérida, with a population of around 2000. It was established in 1811 as the principal port of Yucatán during the henequen boom, lending its name to the agave-derived fiber. Later supplanted by the more modern port of Progreso to the east, Sisal's importance declined and today it is a small fishing village with beach traffic, and plans to grow as a tourist destination. It was recognized as Pueblo Mágico in 2020.
