Kowloon Restaurant, a sprawling landmark at 948 Broadway in Saugus, was opened in 1950 as The Mandarin House—a small 40-50 seat restaurant serving a few dozen Chinese and American dishes. In 1958, Madeline and William Wong bought the restaurant and changed the name to Kowloon Restaurant and Cocktail Lounge. In the next 50 years, the Wong family added five additions to the original building, increasing capacity to 1,200 across a number of themed rooms including the Volcano Bay Room, the Tiki Lagoon, the Mandarin Room, the Thai Grille, and the Hong Kong Lounge as well as a Luau Room, and expanded the menu to include over 300 pan-Asian items including Polynesian, Japanese and Thai. The restaurant continues to be operated by the third generation of the Wong family.
