Amber is fossilised tree resin. Sometimes, because of its sticky nature, insects would become trapped in it and die, becomng embedded in the resin.

Once covered by the resin, oygen was excluded and the natural process of decay was halted, leaving the insect oerfectly preserved

This amber specimen was collected in Lithuania.
