The Power of Three - Outer Banks NC Seascape Nags Head North Carolina OBX

Evening light and a 1 minute long exposure under the Nags Head Pier just before sunset during our Outer Banks 2018 workshops last autumn. There is just something about the beach, the smell of salt water in the air, your toes in the sand, man I can't wait to get back to the coast again this spring in Charleston! Hope you enjoy the view!

The Path Less Traveled - Outer Banks North Carolina Seascape Nags Head NC

I spent some time at the coast last week leading this year's photography workshops in Nags Head along the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and the OBX didn't disappoint. Despite it being quite windy as is frequently the case in OBX, we had a couple mornings with beautiful bubblegum pink and blue skies to work with that were moving pretty quickly in the winds. I'd been looking for a chance to use my 10-stop filter all week and this seemed like a good opportunity.

During one of the workshops we had a discussion on landscape photography as a contact sport, not being afraid to get "into" the scene and shoot images from less common perspectives using less common methods, hopefully producing images that are unique in the process. Sometimes it simply means shooting from a less comfortable position, and sometimes it can mean an element of risk for your camera gear and personal safety.

The result pictured here is a 2.5 minute exposure that was as fun to shoot as it was challenging. The large waves crashing into my legs sent considerable amounts of water splashing upward all over my camera and lens, combined with the spray coming off of the concrete slabs onto my lens from the windy conditions kept me on my toes for sure. Funny how these come out looking so calm and peaceful. I can't say how many times I had to grab my tripod and run before the 2.5 minute exposures were finished, but I got a few clean ones and man was it a blast! #youlldryouteventually

Autumn Waterfall Dry Falls - Highlands NC Waterfalls

We absolutely love Highlands NC for all the great sights, roads, food, people and more! Dry Falls is one of the reasons we are so fond of Highlands and it is easy to see why. This is an epic waterfall in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, and during the fall foliage it is really something special to see. Hope you enjoy the view! ;-)

Update 11/02/12: This image is featured in Outdoor Photographer Magazine's new desktop wallpaper for the month of November, go get yours now! www.outdoorphotographer.com/extras/calendar.html

Folly Beach Pier at Sunrise - Charleston South Carolina Seascape

Early morning golden light on the Folly Beach Pier just after sunrise in Folly Beach, SC. I had a wonderful time leading my workshop group in Charleston last week, and was lucky enough to snag this shot of some great morning light on the pier under dramatic skies while I was down there. It's always a good thing to get out and breathe the fresh sea air with your feet in the surf, and I'm always thankful for the time spent with our good friends Mark and Carol VanDyke as well as Keith and Tiffany Briley.

Sometimes it's the little things I appreciate the most in an image. Those small details in a dynamic and rapidly changing scene that make one frame stand out from another. What caught my eye in this exposure was how the lines and curves in the water patterns were mirrored in the sky, it's those little details that you can't plan for that I find most rewarding. Hope you enjoy the view!
