The Road Home - Edisto Island South Carolina Dirt Road Landscape Charleston SC

Morning light under the canopy of live oak trees along Botany Bay Road on Edisto Island, SC. The ACE Basin in South Carolina is one of the largest undeveloped estuaries along the Atlantic Coast of the United States, and the natural beauty of the dense live oak forest dripping in spanish moss in this region is an outdoor photographer's paradise. I've spent the last couple days transferring some older archives to new backup drives and this frame from Botany Bay from a few years ago caught my eye so I figured I'd develop it and upload it. Hope you enjoy this view of the beautiful SC lowcountry y'all!

Spring in the Old South - Charleston SC Spring Flowers Scenic Landscape South Carolina

You just gotta love the spring flowers in full bloom at Magnolia Gardens in Charleston, SC. I got down to Charleston this week to do some scouting for our upcoming workshop this weekend, it feels so good to be back out in the field again after the long winter. The azaleas were in full bloom and I can't wait to get back down there this week to shoot some new locations we checked out. I hope you enjoy the view!

An amazing sunset at Folly Beach on our most recent trip to the coastal areas near Charleston, SC. This South Carolina beach scene had all of the elements a landscape photographer could hope for with a great subject, incredible lighting, leading lines in the sky and water to draw you deeper into the scene, and it's all topped off by a richly colored sunset sky. I especially like the way a beam of golden evening light perfectly highlights the fine detail of the tree trunks.

I shot this image on the eve of Hurricane Irene as she approached Charleston, and you can see the leading edge of the storm on the horizon. I returned to this location the next morning as the storm hit and it was anything but the peaceful and serene environment pictured here. Hope you enjoy it, comments welcome! ;-)

Update: This image was featured in a recent issue of Charleston Magazine and will be featured in an upcoming issue of Shutterbug Magazine, grab a copy and check it out!

Single exposure shot with a Nikon D700 and the 17-35mm 2.8 lens, CP and ND Grad.

Forest Light - Appalachian Trail Blue Ridge Mountains NC

A beautiful patch of light breaking through heavy fog in the forest off of the Appalachain Trail between Roan Mountain Tennessee and Spruce Pine North Carolina. I saw this spot of light from a distance while doing some off-trail exploration during my "Spring in the Highlands" workshop last year and just had to reach it to get a shot. The conditions on this morning were less than ideal for outdoor photography with cold temps, high winds, and heavy fog hampering our efforts. With the poor conditions at hand and a few folks thinking about giving up on finding something good to shoot, I spent much of the morning with my group discussing the ability to see good light and find a shot in any given conditions. As we headed up the trail I noticed these small pockets of warm light moving through the forest below us, and after a brief time chasing them discovered this lovely spot where all seemed right in the world. There was no wind, no sound, it was as if we had walked into an oasis of peace and quiet, beautiful nature bathed in this wonderful warm light. While not every day offers epic sunrises and sunsets over distant mountain ranges, there is always beauty to be found around us if we look for it. Hope you enjoy it!
