The Standard Bread Building was built in 1924, co-founded by Dick Lamothe and Cecil Morrison, father of the late MP and National Capital Commission chair Jean Pigott. Bread was sold and delivered from the site by horse and wagon, with the third floor used as a hayloft hence the name “The Loft Art Studios”, which was founded in 2005.

In 2020, the city of Ottawa designated the building under the Ontario Heritage Act due to it being a good example of early 20th century industrial design. Architect Sydney Comber was known for commercial bakeries and dairy production facilities across Canada where he employed large flared mushroom columns, as seen within the Loft Art Studios today. At present, our space houses 18 working artists from across the Ottawa and Outaouais region. Our artists practice in a variety of mediums ranging from painting to glass work to puppetry.
