In the summer of 2014, contractor crews seismically retrofit the supporting columns of the SR 410 Scatter Creek Bridge near Enumclaw, WA.
The crews placed steel jackets around the bridge piers which will help keep the piers stable and reduce the risk of collapse in the event of an earthquake.
Preserving SR 410 is vitally important because there are no local roads to use as a detour if an earthquake made the bridge unusable during the winter months. A closure of the bridge would completely cut off people between the span and Crystal Mountain Boulevard, where SR 410 closes each year due to snow on Cayuse Pass.
In addition one of the bridge piers has become vulnerable to erosion from the creek. To combat this, crews added rocks and other material to prevent water from washing away the banks around the bridge pier.
Fish habitat in the stream was also improved, thanks the removal of concrete and rebar debris left behind from an old bridge. Woody debris and other native vegetation was added to help improve the creek and surrounding environment.
