User / WSDOT / Memorial tree planting near SR 536
Washington State Dept of Transportation / 33,763 items
In late October 2018, WSDOT crews in Skagit County picked up five young elm trees from a local nursery and drove them over to what would become their new home in Edgewater Park off SR 536. There, they with Mount Vernon Parks and Recreation worked to plant these new trees, five needed to reestablish the 50 trees to honor veterans – specifically the 50 from Skagit County who died during WWI. This replanting effort helps replace an original memorial, planted in the 1930's, along SR 536. Those trees were cut down, starting in the 1950's, due to development and disease - the last two needing to come down in March 2018.
