It’s likely people give little thought to this bridge. It carries Interstate 5 over a key road for Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Unfortunately, the span has been hit over and over again by overweight vehicles. Crews are now building a taller span. The new bridge will also accommodate the new HOV lanes. It takes a lot of planning to do this kind of work. Workers are building a new span while keeping I-5 open. It takes phases to do the work. Crews first built the new section of the bridge (right). Once the bridge opened, travelers were shifted onto the new bridge. Workers will demolish the existing bridge between the shifted northbound and southbound lanes. Once built, traffic will move onto the new section of bridge. Workers then will demolish and rebuild the final section of the bridge (left).
