The U.S. Army’s 249th Birthday was celebrated June 14, 2024, in Charleston, West Virginia, with events hosted by the West Virginia National Guard, West Virginia Army National Guard, the Office of Governor Jim Justice and the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History.
Friday morning began with a 2.49-mile ruck march and 5-mile run from the Veteran’s Memorial at the Capitol Complex attended by Soldiers, family members, a Mountaineer Challenge Academy-South team and an Airman!
In the afternoon, a ceremony was held on the Capitol steps with distinguished guests and speakers U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Michaelle Munger, Assistant Adjutant General, WVNG, Cabinet Secretary Randall Reid-Smith and Brian Abraham, Chief of Staff to the Governor.
WVARNG Recruiting and Retention Battalion Commander Maj. Caroline Muriama conducted a swearing In of Sgt. 1st Class Todd Crawford (reenlistment) and Antonio Kinder (enlistment).
Chaplain (Maj.) Justin Elliott provided the invocations while the 249th Army Band, WV Color Guard, Military Support for Civil Affairs, and Public Affairs supported the event.
The celebration closed in the Culture Center with remarks by WVARNG Chief of Staff Col. Robert Kincaid and a traditional cake cutting ceremony, which symbolizes the Army’s strength, unity and ongoing commitment to our nation. The oldest Soldier, Col. Charles Riddle, represents the wisdom and experience of our seasoned warriors, and the youngest Soldier, Pvt. Raymond McCune, symbolizes the youth and vitality of our Army’s future. Sgt. Maj. Clay Evans presented the ceremonial sword.
