In the 14th Century and in order to escape the constant wars in Italy, the Papal Court moved to Avignon. For nearly 100 years this Provencial city in Southern France was the capital of the Roman Catholic world. In 1378 a Pope was elected in Rome and for a while there were a series of Popes in both cities.
