Eileen, my Grandmother, was born in 1896, She the baby on her mother's knee in this photograph; together with her father and brother (nick-named in the future "the BA" after his degree from university (Trinity College, Dublin, I think)). The back of the photograph bears the names Alice O'Connor, Patrick O'Sullivan and Eileen Mary O'Sullivan (no mention of the name of the male child) and is marked "Fermoy".

Fermoy is a town in County Cork, Eire. It is a small town (population approximately 5,000) situated in the centre of the lush Blackwater Valley. It is on the crossroads between the Rosslare/Killarney and Dublin/Cork routes.

By 1914 Eileen was training as a nurse at Queens University (Hospital) Belfast but was told that at that time and as a Catholic, she had little prospect of advancement in Northern Ireland. She volunteered for nursing service towards the end of the Great War and saw terrible sights during her time behind the lines at Ypres, Belgium.

At the end of the Great War she, like many others, emigrated to British India where she married a senior engineer working on building railways in Northern India and what today is Paksitan.

The earliest known family photograph. The original is now stored in the dark.

Silver salts on a glass plate in a 'gilt' foil frame but not in good condition.

Thought to be a portrait of my grandmother's grandfather and maybe taken in about 1870-85. The portrait has been allowed to deteriorate and now only the arms, body and lower head/face are left. The gentleman seems to be leaning on a sideboard or table with a tray on it. I have often thought he is wearing a hat but this could be due to the deterioration of the upper sections of the photograph.

The facial resembance between this gentleman and my grandmother is striking (granny lacked the side wiskers!).

see www.flickr.com/photos/xerones/20199413/in/set-390826/, www.flickr.com/photos/xerones/20199376/in/set-390826/ and www.flickr.com/photos/xerones/16284918/in/set-390826/ for more shots of my grandmother.

If any one has thoughts about this type of photograph including the possible date and technique used, I'd be happy to hear...

The gentleman is clearly prosperous and as far as the family recalls, he was a local landowner in the Fermoy Co. Cork area. My grandmother's parents were Alice O'Connor and Patrick O'Sullivan, respectively ( see www.flickr.com/photos/xerones/16265319/in/photostream/) and I am uncertain whether this is a maternal or paternal grandfather of my grandmother...

The photograph was almost certainly taken in Ireland or possibly on a trip to England.

A family photograph, probably taken in the garden in India in the early 1930's. My mother is the older of the two girls kneeling in the centre with my Grandmother, her mother kneeling to her left. The young men on the far right and far left (standing) may be Uncles John and Richard Morris, respectively, but this is unclear. The other people are unidentified.

Is the younger child the "Mary" identified in the shot by Horseguards, Whitehall, London?
