Within a few metres of York’s busy Parliament Street, there is a different world. Just one example, Three Cranes Lane, off St Sampson's Square.
It takes it’s name from a pub built in the eighteenth century called The Three Cranes which in1830 was offering "every accommodation to strangers and market people visiting York". Indeed in 1904 and 1910 the Landlady of the Three Cranes was charged for "allowing singing and dancing in an unlicensed room".
The name originates from three lifting cranes which were in the Lane, although the pub's exterior sign today displays three birds.
These alleys - known as snickleways - offer a haven from street bustle but can look oddly intimidating to those who don't know York. They can be overlooked by street cleaners so expect some litter too.
Other than heating vents, electric lights and the use of plastic waste water pipes, I doubt this has changed in 100 years. The (originally) gas street lamp now sports three electric bulbs – all smashed so not a place to go after dark, perhaps?
