Lanes and lines

The City of York is in love with coloured road surfaces and lines. Colours designating special lanes (for buses and cycles, etc.), lines informing drivers of hazards and where they can and cannot park. It can all get a bit confusing if your are on the look out for a photo-opportunity too (as well as avoiding other road users and pedestrians!).

And here is one of the teams responsible for 'white' and 'yellow'

"Make mine a '99'" :~)

April 3rd. The river continues to rise. The note shows the location of the riverside walk/tow path, now under several feet of river.

One worry. I am standing about 20m from my new house!! Behind me, fortunately...

The phrase "Bar" in York means a gateway into the City. The word "Gate" is taken from the old Viking word "Gata", which means street. Finally, the word "Mickle" descends from another Viking word meaning great or important. Therefore Micklegate Bar is "The Great and Important Street's Gate", this is because it was the gateway to the South and considered by many as the 'Royal' entrance to the city.

Micklegate Bar was a favourite spot for displaying the heads of executed traitors.....
