After a devastating earthquake in 1693, the city of Noto was extensively rebuilt in the then current, Baroque style. The centre is undergoing a transformation of restoration at the moment and will soon be one of the finest examples of that style anywhere in the world. It is little short of magnificent and not to be missed on any visit to Southeast Sicily.

The Palazzo Nicolaci is close to the Duomo and contains some of the finest example of carved balconies in the city. This is the detail from a balcony support.

Noto is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Restoration work nearly complete:

In 1996 the residents of Noto were awoken in the night by a crash; their catherdral dome and part of the roof had collapsed. Funds from UNESCO have enabled this beautiful building and many others in Noto, Ragusa and Siracusa to be restored to their Baroque splendour.
