Founded in 1827, the York Institute dates from a time when education was seen as a means of "bettering oneself". This decorated redbrick gem has various inscriptions on the facade including the title "York Institute", "Arts" and "Science".
It now houses the York Dungeon tourist attraction and the Gallery nightclub.
