The Shimagawa is a tributary of the Azumagawa (吾妻川) that is a tributary of the Tonegawa (利根川), which flows into the Pacific at Cape Inubouzaki (犬吠埼) in Chiba prefecture. Japanse inns for the hotsprings started to develop along the river in the late 17th century.

Orange leaves in the upper centre are of Kohauchiwa-kaede (Siebold's maple, Acer sieboldianum) that is native to Japan.
