Melaka has been strategically important as a port city facing the Malacca strait. Melaka was established in 1396 as the seat of Melaka Sultanate that controlled present-day Peninsular Malaysia and the central part of Sumatra across the strait.
It was conquered by Portuguese in 1511, by Dutch in 1641, and by British East India Company in 1826. Peninsular Malaysia became independent in 1957, and Northern Borneo (Kalimantan) was incorporated into Malaysia in 1963. Singapore dominated by Chinese immigrants left Malaysia in 1965.
