Captive American soldiers were sent to Hoa Lo Prison for torture and brainwashing during the Vietnam War. Since the life in the prison was so uncomfortable and uncourteous, it was sarcastically called "Hanoi Hilton" by the captives.

In the late 1990s, Vietnamese government decided to convert the prison site to a five-star hotel with foreign investment under Doi Moi economic reform initiative. Real Hilton Hotel was almost built here although the hotel was named Somerset Grand Hanoi in the end. Part of the prison was converted to a museum as a symbol of Vietnam-US friendship?
