Taj Mahal was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as the mausoleum of his consort Mumtaz Mahal. Construction started in 1632 and completed in 1643.
Taj Mahal is an icon of India and received 6.9 million visitors in 2018-2019 fiscal year. Although the number is huge, visitors usually come into this garden, take photos, walk around its base to watch the structure, and leave. They don't climb on the structure as they do in Mayan temples in Mexico and Guatemala.
It looked very white when I took this photo, but the concern for the yellowing of marble caused by polluted air from nearby factories seems to be more serious these days than the visitor number.
