Saint James the Great parish church is located near the Hundred Islands. It was built in 1609 by Augustinians. The tower used to be much higher but was damaged by a typhoon. There is a report of another severe damage by a typhoon in 2009.
Luzon lowlands are home to the mainstream Filipino culture based on Catholicism. Unlike the Cordillera mountain areas, Spanish colonial influences were more obvious and comprehensive making the Philippines a unique country in Asia. Spaniard, however, could not convert Filipinos to Spanish speakers like in other Spanish territories. Tribal traditions are persistent in the Philippines, and ethnic groups still speak their own languages.
