It is in the handful of moments, those which we choose to embrace the strongest, that we are defined the best.

To be true, I never feel as strongly 'myself' than when I am out hiking along some sandy stretch of the coast with the beach underfoot and the ocean surf pounding alongside me. I have many good memories wrapped up in this coast, and have lived all my life along it. The Oregon coast really is a magical place and I believe there is no such thing as a bad day at the beach in Oregon. Sunny days are magnificent with stunning blue skies reflected along the wide expanses of flat beach. Stormy winter days take your breath away with the display of power and lovely solitude that winter weather brings. Everytime I go I find something new. And I rarely come home with dry shoes.

Found in Bandon with my Zero Image 6x9 pinhole. About a 45 second exposure.

If I remember correctly this is the small lighthouse that sits on the jetty at the very northern end of Bandon beach. I had quite a scramble on the rocks to get out to this point, especially lugging my tripod and camera gear. I think I am genetically predisposed to scrambling out on precarious piles of rocks whenever I go to the beach, then again, no day at the beach is complete until I have wet shoes either. ;-)

Taken with my Zero Image pinhole on my first ever trip to Hug Point. Actually I have been there before, but have never braved the ocean to run around the point to the waterfall. The Pacific was very obliging that day in allowing me to live up to my philosophy that you never come back from the Oregon coast with dry feet. We were about two-thirds the way around the point when a particularly aggressive wave decided our shoes were just too dry for his standards. After that though, it makes it much easier to wade through the surf and water in search of shots you might have been hesitant to take with dry feet. This is one of them. I wanted to clamber down onto the rocks for this shot but even I know my limits...most of the time. Pinhole has taken enough baths in the Pacific for my tastes.

There is something enlivening about the ocean, from the steady murmur of the waves to its hypnotic power. I never growed tired of seeing it, or photographing it for that matter. This shot was found at Arcadia Beach, just south of Cannon Beach. One of my favorite beaches and one that has a fair amount of history for me. On this day, the tide was well in, and I had to run out between waves to reach this finger of rock and scramble up on it, and then out. Each time a wave came in, I was a bit cut off from dry sand, though if I was willing to get my feet wet, I could have easily waded back, I am pretty respectful of the ocean's ability to get one in trouble. But nonetheless, it was a pretty amazing perch upon which I sat and burned through an entire roll of film. It was one of those many moments that can be difficult to finally turn your back and return from because they are so magical. I could live a hundred lifetimes and never grow tired of moments like these. Something tells me though I am going to need a new pinhole after too many more though. Mine is still being held together by will power and electrical tape. ;-)

This exposure was about 75 seconds long as it was taken with Ilford Pan F.

If there is another, fantastical realm out there beside our own, and if it comes close enough to ours that the two merge at times for brief moments, and if that were to happen somewhere along the Oregon coast, then I think it would be Arcadia Beach. There are few, if any, other spots along the coast that I consider more magical than this beach. Everytime I venture west and find myself at this mystical stretch of sand, my cameras and I produce something memorable and sometimes, at least for me, achingly beautiful. Ultimately, I take pictures for myself. Being on a finger of rock with the ocean breeze in your face and the surf pounding inexorably on all sides, it is difficult to leave. It is easy to really to let one's self be absorbed in the scene, and therefore not easy to leave. So I take pictures. I take pictures so that months or years later, when even my most diligently kept memories start to dull a bit, I can revisit these moments of my life and be reminded. Photographs are sort of a visual diary for me, as there is a part of me in each one that I take.

This shot was taken on the same little spit of rock as the Owen's Rock pinhole image that I just posted, even the same roll of film. This perspective just involved turning a little to my right, not even a full 90 degrees. I was particularly fascinated by the motion of the waves crashing up the narrow channel to my right and wondered how they would look over a 30 second exposure. Make no doubt, they look soft and silky here, but they were really pounding up with quite a bit of force.
