The Hawthorne is a bit different from the other bridges I have posted so far, it is a vertical lift truss bridge, as opposed to the bascule style of the Morrison. It was designed by John Waddell, who invented the vertical lift and later went to design both the Steel and the Interstate bridges.

On December 19th of this year, the Hawthorne Bridge will turn 100 years old.

Let's see, if I remember correctly three of the main types of columns, or pillars, are Ionian, Doric and Corinthian. I think this one is Fremontian then. And do not be fooled, for what it holds up is definitely an important part of life here in Portland.

I have not posted to this series in a while, but I have still been plugging away at the bridges now and then. I have even included the new bridge they are building between the Ross Island and Marquam. Pretty excited to document the construction of that one.

Anyway, when I started photographing the Ross Island, I knew I wanted to actually get out to the island and see the bridge from there. So one evening, Josh, Dave and I took a boat out there, hijacked a departing family's campfire, and waited for dark to fall.

Since that evening, this view has ceased to exist with the new bridge coming in, so I am glad I got out there when I did.

Next up are the railroad bridges I think.

The weather forecast is calling for snow starting tonight and seemingly every day until forever going forward. I don't know about you, but I am pretty excited. This is my favorite time of year and a good snowy night (or day) are one of the things I most look forward to every winter in Portland. I know not everyone feels this way, and to a degree I empathize. The commute becomes atrocious with just a hint of snow. But at the same time it is not like grumbling about it is going to make it melt faster. I'm going to find a slightly trickier commute come tomorrow morning it seems and cold toes and fingers will soon be my travel companion. But I love this weather because it is beautiful and it gives me an opportunity to make images I can enjoy this summer when the temperatures are broiling and we are all complaining about how hot it is, or this spring when it has rained for ten days straight and we are complaining about how rainy it is, or next fall when we are complaining about how much work raking up fallen leaves is. In short, complaining doesn't change the weather and instead just gives you the opportunity to completely miss enjoying the passing experience of it.

My advice is to get out there with a camera, at least on a snowy night this coming week, and walk around and feel the cold flakes alighting on your nose and appreciate how the only sound you hear is the crunching of your feet and the crisp sound of your shutter.

And if you happen to be out in it and cross paths with me, feel free to say hi.
