Offshore, Santa Cruz, California

After scattering ashes of a good friend, we came upon this very large sunfish at the surface. Our captain, who has been on many, many ocean trips, suggested that since it didn't dive after we got close, it may not have been healthy. Still, I like the look.

This species is one of the largest bony fish in the world. This individual was nearly 7 ft. (2+m) long and my photo shows about the front half.

Previously Eriophyes mackiei . Apparently this gall is more colorful on the lower side of the leaf, though I missed that in my hurry. (I could not have identified this Shreve Oak on my own--there was a label at its base in this park like setting.)

Some of the streets go down to the waterfront and some, like this one, end on the bluff, which allows this view of the waterfront, the Bay and Morro Rock.
Morro Bay, California

from 665nm infrared (I have appreciated this view for many years. My infrared camera prodded me to revisit it.)

The Pereira Octagon Barn is owned by and has been restored by the Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County. It was built in 1906 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Current use is for occasional cultural events. This particular weekend there was a show of SLOPE, San Luis Outdoor Painters for the Environment, some amazing art, in the building just to the left of the photo. See: www.slope-painters.com/
