I'd say 90% of my gardens are native, but I do enjoy including some plants that are not. Such as these eye-catching African daisy Osteospermum 'sunshine beauty'.

Hardy, evergreen groundcover producing masses of flowers which are are stunningly vibrant through spring through to autumn.

Flower diameter 5 cm

Dietes grandiflora is native to South Africa. A vigorous, clumping perennial with long, rigid, sword-like green leaves.

The iris-like blooms are born in abundance during spring and summer, sitting above the foliage on tall, wiry stems.

The blooms only last a day or so, and I always anticipate their opening when fresh buds are sent out en masse after the previous flowering - I’ve noticed, particularly after rain.

Specifically Louisina iris 'Clyde Redmond'....a non-native indulgence planted around my frog pond/habitat.

It has been just wonderful seeing the first purple-blue with gold accent flowers appear, now that signs of spring are in the air.

I learned that ‘Louisiana iris' is a taxonomic group of five iris species native to Louisiana and surrounding regions of the southeastern United States.

Also commonly known as paddle plant, the flapjack succulent is so called because of the paddle or clam-like shape of its leaves that form in rosette clusters. I guess also a reference to the flat, dense cakes made of oats, honey and melted butter.

The wide, thick, fleshy leaves can take on a striking orange/red tinge around the edges, as seen here. An erect stalk of up to 1 m can be produced out of the basal rosette of leaves, at the end, an inflorescence of yellow flowers.

Native to South Africa and Botswana regions.

Through mud she rises. Through water she emerges. Through sunlight she blooms.
