Male millipede making its way through the garden terrain.
In this position captured here, one can see what I believe are the modified appendages (coloured yellow), on the ventral surface. These specialized gonopods are used as claspers to hold the female during mating and to transfer sperm.

Millipedes are a group of arthropods that are characterised by having two pairs of jointed legs on most body segments - they are known scientifically as the class Diplopoda (the name being derived from this feature).
Most millipedes are slow-moving detritivores, eating decaying leaves and other dead plant matter. Some eat fungi or suck plant fluids, and a small minority are predatory.
We have around 2000 millipede species here in Australia.

A merry chase, goodness can these move.
Centipede with 15 pairs of long legs. Of note are the impressive pair of antennae and also the even longer pair of caudal appendages at the tail end.

Lifting up a sandstone rock, I found a large and very fast centipede.
This is Cormocephalus aurantiipes. I learned that like most centipedes it comes in many different 'colour forms', depending on locality. There are five species of Cormocephalus, in the Sydney NSW region.
I estimate length for this specimen to be around 120 mm.
