I came across an oh so tiny male flower/crab spider, king of his castle. I watched him hunting, perhaps looking for the ladies.

In the time I spent watching him, he didn't stray from this one small area, as if he'd made it very much his own little pastel paradise.

I chose to present him here as only a small subject, surrounded by his marshmallow kingdom - to emphasise his tiny size.

Seen on native Eremophila nivea.

Native to this country, these tiny Sidymella sp. spiders within family Thomisidae are distinguished by their triangular abdomen with two points at the rear.

I really like the dynamic markings on this one, others I've found have been more uniformly beige/yellow.

Body length 5 mm

Arachtober 12

A lovely flower crab spider amid the soft petals. It is very hard to identify species within the genus Tharrhalea - even I believe, at microscopic levels.

Female 5 mm body length

Incredibly small female crab spider, just a few mm body length. Perhaps a juvenile. I only saw her on these native kangaroo paw flower buds due to the contrasting colours. Out of place when I came upon her, as they usually hang out on flowers of similar colour to themselves.

This could be Thomisus spectabilis, commonly called spectacular crab spider or simply white crab spider.

Usually white, but can have patches of yellow, or appear fully yellow. The legs and head appear almost translucent.

Another suggestion is Zygometis xanthogaster, the milky flower spider (due to the eye ornamentation).

Of interest is that the spider also takes advantage of its colour scheme's reflectance of UV light to create a colour contrast in the visual field of the bees that subsequently attracts them.
