Today in Ballyseedy Woods near Tralee, Kerry, Ireland. My first visit to this small but lovely woodland retreat after some sort of road incident prevented me getting into Killarney for a much bigger wooded area. After the weekend's scary storms it was nice to get some peace and quiet.

These ancient woods and forests in Killarney's national park are home to Ireland's national tree - the sessile oak (stalkless acorns) - and countelss other species of trees, shrubs, ferns, brackens, mosses, lichens, plants, flowers and any other type of flora you can think of. Compressing as much as possible into a cohesive image was fun and I had several attempts over a handful of days before getting something near to what I was hoping for. .

Just below Kerry's Dunmore Head (Star Wars location for The Last Jedi apparently) is the dramatic and visually stunning Coumeenoole Strand (beach). When your usual territory is the Peak District this comes as a complete knockout to the senses and serves as a wonderful challenge and inspiration to get a few decent shots. The wind was so strong a tripod was out of the question and it was close to high tide so the beach was also out of bounds. Not 100% tack sharp but close enough hopefully.

Yesterday late afternoon walk that I was about to abandon (photographically) until I spotted some rare but very nice light in the undergrowth. Sharpening my machete I fought my way in to find a simple composition just waiting to be snapped. How long it's been waiting is anyone's guess but I'm betting no-one else in the history of planet earth has ever taken this shot and for some reason that makes me very happy.

Heavy fog greeted my visit to Bula Bay in Killarney's national park (Upper Lake) and in my excitement at the small tree and its blurred reflection I fired off a couple of hopeful, hand-held shots. They didn't look good. Or at least that was my initial reaction. However, I've since grown to love the watercolour effect and mood of this early attempt and nothing I took subsequently with the camera tripod mounted was as pleasing to the eye or soul. And I must admit that any of my work that looks painterly after processing usually proves to be a favourite over time. Any thoughts?
