It’s that time of year when the catkins of the Alder are showing themselves. The catkins of the alder are a key feature of the tree's reproductive system. Alders are monoecious, meaning they have both male and female catkins on the same tree.
Male Catkins are long, drooping, and cylindrical, typically measuring 5–10 cm in length. They develop in autumn and release pollen in early spring. Their yellowish-brown color makes them easily recognizable.
Female Catkins are much smaller (about 1 cm long), upright, and reddish when young. After pollination, they develop into small, woody, cone-like structures that persist on the tree, containing seeds that are dispersed by wind and water.
