The Na Pali Coast on the northwest side of Kaua'i was probably the most incredible experience we had during our recent trip to Hawai'i. These intimidating cliffs tower upwards of 4,000 feet. For comparison, the mast of the catamaran in the middle of the frame is roughly 70-90 feet tall. Unfortunately, this photo will never do justice compared to seeing this in person, but I hope you still enjoy it.
My wife and I did a catamaran sunset cruise which is the cheaper way to see the Na Pali coast vs a helicopter tour. The catamaran was nice because we got to take our time and enjoy the view, but being that its winter the conditions were pretty rough at times which made everything difficult including taking photos.
I knew I wanted to do the best I could to show these cliffs and I knew a single photo with a wide lens would do the opposite. I threw on my 70-200 and started shooting this handheld. At one point as I'm trying to hang on to the boat and shoot this, I leaned over and told my wife "this is never going to stitch together". Obviously, I was wrong.

Built-in 1912 Hanalei Pier sits in Hanalei Bay on the north shore of Kaua'i. My wife and I spent a good half day walking along the beach watching surfers and talking to the locals. Earlier this year this area was hit with nearly 27 inches of rain in 24 hours causing major flooding and destroying many homes. As we walked along the beach we could see some of the houses right on the beach that collapsed from sinkholes, it was so sad to see. We talked to one local who mentioned that the beach was finally starting to get back to being a beautiful beach again.

Could be a good thing if you like coconut...
I'm slowly processing images from my recent trip to the Big Island of Hawai'i and thought I'd process a few infrared photos I really enjoyed shooting IR on this trip, the palm trees made for some really great subjects for playing around with invisible light. This was from a late afternoon visit to Pu'uhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park where my wife and I walked around for a couple of hours learning about the incredibly interesting history.
This was shot handheld on my full-spectrum converted Canon 6D and my Canon 16-35 f/4 and a B+W 093 IR filter.

As the title shows this is the Kilauea Lighthouse on the north shore of Kaua'i. As this is just a pull-off vantage point it is an easy shot to grab and check of your list. On this particular day, it was raining off and on as it usually does during the rainy season. The off and on rain was creating some pretty great windows for light to peek through such as this case where there was just enough of a break in the clouds for the sun to peek through and spotlight the lighthouse. Also if you look close, you can see what I'm only assuming is an albatross as this lighthouse also acts as a wildlife refuge.
