‘Druid Inn’, Main Street, Birchover, Derbyshire. Saturday 07 November 2015.

A traditional county free house that is very difficult to photograph. The main room features open fires at both ends which is lovely on a cold winter’s night. Both the landlord and the landlady are passionate about beer, with the central bar offering four real ales.

The pub has a mixed clientele of locals plus tourists visiting the Peak District National Park. Dogs are welcome in this comfortably and friendly pub.

Excellent home-cooked food is served in both the main room and a separate restaurant. The menu is chalked up on a blackboard although it is extremely difficult to read as the choices on offer are written very close together. I had a lovely meal, meat on meat (several strips of steak) served with chips and flat mushroom (£16) accompanied with a small house salad (£2). Unfortunately on this occasion none of the desserts on offer appealed to me, so I had another pint instead.

Red Lion, Richmond Hill, Main Street, Birchover, Derbyshire. Wednesday 03 July 2013.

We had an evening meal in this pub which surprisingly is not in the CAMRA 2013 GBG despite it having six real ales and the beer being in excellent condition. The only downside was that we sat in the games room with the poor people rather than in the nice posh lounge that had a gathering of lovely ladies in it. In addition the food we were served was completely different to what we ordered. It was “pie night” Brian and I ordered ham and turkey pie and got fish pie, presumably someone took the wrong ones out of the freezer or they were incorrectly labelled. Although this was fine with us mistakes like this should never happen in case someone has an allegedly. If Jules had been with us and they served her a pie containing mushrooms it would have been an air ambulance ride to the nearest causality department.

The Church Inn, Main Street, Chelmorton, Derbyshire. Saturday 14 July 2012.

The pub is in the 2012 CAMRA GBG. It is located opposite the village church and is a traditional pub that caters fror both locals and walkers. The main room is laid out for dining and good home-cooked food is on offer; however, a cosy pub atmosphere is maintained. Guest beers are usually from local micros.

On my visit I had the lamb shank served with new potatoes and vegetables (£12).
