A-458 (MX-627) drifts across Papadia bridge with train 500 Athens - Thessaloniki in tow. I spent the entire January 4, 1998 around the bridge until the sun was gone. Now, 20 years later, this ultimately scenic portion of the mainline through the Greek mountains will be bypassed by a new alignment.

OSE A-456 (MLW MX627) leads train 602 towards Bralos station in central Greece on fabulous April 13, 1998.
The clean air provides a splendid view on the snowcapped Parnassos mountain range which rise up to 2455 m above sea level. The train is well below at 350 m.

A-452 passes through a classic cut & fill alignment in the hills surrounding Avlon, north of Athens.
I spent the afternoon on New Year's Day 1998 to photograph train 602 to Thessaloniki. I used the other train activity of IC DMU sets and GE-powered locals to eventually find the right spot hiking in the low January sun. The abundant scent of wild herbs in the hills is unforgettable.

A-558 (Electroputere Craiova LDE4000) crosses Papadia bridge with train 1512 to Larissa on January 4, 1998.
A boiler van provided steam heating. Two former DB-carriages stand out, a BCm half-sleeperette with its signature windows running second and a Bm232 bringing up the rear.

IC 42 to Volos was running 30 mins late when it reached Inoi in the very last rays of sun on January 1, 1998. DMU 624 is graced by road grime only, taggers weren't active back then.
