Nine months. That’s the approximate time my local area had decent fog conditions. Until the morning I photographed this shot.
Quite often in the evening, I look at the app I use for weather conditions to see if there is a chance to get some fog in the morning. Many times in these nine months the app suggested the foggy conditions would be around in more or less amount. We didn’t have any of it. Sometimes there was moisture in the air or maybe a weak mist that looked nice in the early morning light, but that was it. The whole Autumn passed with not a single foggy morning in my area. Which was especially annoying as I was looking forward to changing colours season as I always do. Never expected to see a fogless Autumn.
Now, I was walking on my usual trail on the riverside where I spent most of my mornings when I saw about fifty meters in front of me that I was about to enter the foggy cloud, which was not that unusual for the mornings. Many times from a distance I would see similar cloud but when I approach closely I didn’t see any fog. But this time it was different. Quickly I realized that I was about to get surrounded by thick fog and my excitement started to build. At one moment I got on my mind that I don’t think I saw any fog indications the previous night when I looked at my app. I went to check it while I was looking for my composition and saw that no fog was participated. And none of the weather apps forecasted fog. I guess that’s how it goes with it.
I knew where to go for a shot. I was waiting this whole time for conditions like this to go to my most inspiring and productive place where I like to photograph. Suddenly the light came out beaming through the layer of thick fog. It was magical and amazing. I felt this warm delight on my face while looking at the silhouettes of a group of trees in front of me. I gave myself just a few moments to indulge in this scene before I continued my photographic journey that morning.
When I was editing the shot, I wanted to present the scene as close as I could to what it looked like at the time of shooting. So I didn’t feel I wanna warm it more or do any similar manipulations. I wanted to have a reliable memory of a long-anticipated walk in the forest.

When I go for a walkabout with my camera, in some familiar place, my eyes usually go to the scenes that I already photographed. You know, where I know the good compositions are. There’s nothing wrong with that, nature changes all the time, but because of that recently I started feeling like my photography is a bit stale, I’ve lost excitement a bit, and I needed to find something new to photograph.
To challenge me, now I almost deliberately avoid checking some locations closely. I only look from afar, from the trail I’m walking, and if it seems tempting from a distance and I can’t resist, I come and examine it closely.
I had some luck recently with finding new compositions in familiar surroundings. This field is surrounded by a fence all around. I’m not sure if that is the reason but somehow I didn’t photograph it closely that much till now. What I like the most is that all the growth here is wild-growing. Nobody planted anything here. And the field is vast. For someone having a long lens, for example, this would be a paradise to photograph. There are many species of birds here, I saw hares one time etc. Other than that I don’t think there is much other wildlife.
Now, to get back to my photo, what drew me to shoot this is that this tree is a bit bent to the left fitted with white shrubs and the soft blue sky. It was biting cold outside. Morning. Quiet. In the distance, you could hear some chirping from time to time. And the ripple of the river that is nearby. I did my best to enjoy my time here. Which was not too much of a problem for me as I was pretty much alone in this vast landscape. And I like that. At moments I would just stay in one place and turn all around and observe the winter. Only me and the nature. I didn’t see many passers-by.
For a long time, I didn’t enjoy morning walks like that morning. The weather forecast for the foreseeable is that there will not be any snow. Which is not ideal obviously. Still, I hope I didn’t see the last of snow this winter. Whatever happens with the weather at least I’ve got this photo as a reminder of an enjoyable winter morning.

Before the start of winter, the weather forecast was that it would be strong and snowy. I was looking forward to that, to having a bit of atmosphere to capture some good photos, as Autumn didn’t fulfil my full expectations, although it was always going to be the most beautiful season for photography.
If I’m not wrong, we have just three days of mild snowing as of today. It is still mid-January, so the probability of heavy snowing in my local area is still a possibility. Still, as time goes by, I’m becoming increasingly sceptical about it. So, I decided to use every chance I had to get photos with snow in it.
A few mornings ago, when I woke up and saw there were whites around I was actually not that excited at all, because I thought it was not enough amount of snow that fall through the night. I was prepared to go outside anyway regardless of the weather. As I was moving up, I noticed that the amount of snow was actually quite higher than I imagined in the first place. Suddenly, I was a bit overwhelmed with warm feelings, although it was cold outside.
It is actually quite funny, how weather can reshape the look of a landscape, at least for photography purposes. I photographed that morning, many sights that I wouldn’t imagined being photogenic or having that catchy factor to even consider getting a photo.
For this photo, I was passing by the road that is beside the one I ended up photographing. By chance, I noticed the road lines leading further into the part of the forest. After a quick observation, I composed a photo that I probably liked the most that morning from a bunch I’ve got. Now, I mentioned the way the weather can reshape the landscape for photography purposes. Not in a million years would I even consider photographing this location in any other weather conditions due to how much trash is on the ground under the snow. Also, there are some power wires here, but they are perfectly blended in the scenery.
All in all, I had a much fun morning in the forest photographing. One of the reasons was that I didn’t expect this amount of snow. But you know what they say, best things happen when you least expect it.

This is my last photo post of this year. I deliberately left this one for the last day of the year. When I reflect on the weather this year, I don’t think I had much luck in my local area. I hope that changes with Winter.
In the last couple of weeks, we had two days of just mild snowfall. But still, it was lovely. This photo was taken on the second time snow was falling. Although I was struggling to get a proper photo to be satisfied. Out of the bunch, I kinda like this one the most because of, you guessed it, the paddle with some autumnal leaves. In my previous wonders around this spot, I always noticed that the ground in this area after some rain or snow, where the paddle is, was always a bit muddy and wet, but I was never there to see the paddle. So I used it now as a sort of an anker to lead the viewer into the rest of the photo. You could see parts of the paddle with some icing on it. I have a mixture of colours in the photo, which I like. So, for the first Winter photo, I think it’s a nice one. I am waiting for I much heavier snow to fall and hopefully to stay for a while. It would be so cool to visit several forest areas around my place of living and explore while there is a thick layer of snow.
At last, I want to say how grateful I am for having the chance to share my photos here on Flickr. There are some folks here with a seriously good photo gallery, which is always great for some inspiration.
Looking forward to getting some good photos and posting them here but until then… Cheers everybody!

Today is officially the last calendar day of Autumn. Although cold weather and a few snowflakes have come a few times until now, tomorrow is the day when Winter officially starts. So, while I’m writing this couple of rows, I think it’s the right time to look, photography-wise, how the Autumn went for me.
In some of my previous posts I wrote that if something marked the last three months of this, for me, the best season in the year for photography, it’s the lack of fog in my local area. Which is totally unexpected and a shame. I was so much looking forward, as I always do, for colder weather and colourful nature to arrive with some misty mornings, which we did have, but only in some marginal times.
It is well known to photographers that fog and mist make photos better, there is no doubt about it. Missing that, I was in need of an improvisation with my photos. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying by any means that you can’t have a great image without fog. That would be foolish. Not at all.
When I was in some local forests I was trying harder to get photos that would catch attention, here on this image with colours, more specifically yellow colour. I was careful not to include any sky, in this instance, as the sky would be a distraction in my opinion. Depending on the shot, I almost never liked to see forest shots with sky in it. I was shooting with a lens pointed a bit down from a little hill I was standing a few steps away.
Autumn passed so quickly it seems to me. And I’m a bit sad because of that. I had so many shots in my head that were never taken because of the atmosphere that never happened. That was the main disappointment. Expectations. Need to learn to calm them down.
Now I’m looking forward to Winter. It is forecasted to be a snowy one. Much more snow than in previous ones. So that would be nice for photography. There are some forests in my local area that I didn’t visit any time with snow. Until then, I’m saying goodbye to Autumn and all those shots I didn’t get.
