aka witch hazel aka hamamelis

I thought to try to capture a single flower of a witch hazel bush in macro plus its stringy petals.

As I came to this morning (a little after 7 o'clock - a bit too early for a cold winter's Sunday!) I realised the date today: January 12th. My dad was born on this day in 1919.

And then I remembered my first meeting, by chance on January 12th, 2017, with Ian Douglas, a friend from the local photography group, whose generous expertise allowed me to realise publication of my dad's diaries, originally written in 3 brown-paper covered exercise books he had been able to purchase in a PoW camp in Italy with 'camp money'.

Initially of course, members of my extended family and also several friends read the book. Although it can be regarded as being in a 'niche' market, a further 10 copies were purchased last year, mostly as e-books. My small royalties from sales are donated to the Red Cross remembering my dad's words that without their food parcels sent to the camps, 'a lot of us wouldn't have come back.'

My dad always hoped to publish his diaries himself, but it was not to be. My one regret is that he never knew that I was able to publish them........
