I love French novels; I like the silent sound of the beautiful language in my head. This story, about a dog who went to war, really touched me. It was worth reading twice.

Seeking inspiration for a recent group challenge of 'red and white' I found a few French novels with covers in those colours. Then there was a First Aid book, no use to me who throws a wobbly at the sight of blood; Monsieur Mackintosh tells the story of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his wife visiting the south of France towards the end of his life; and it's probably time again to dip into David Busch's guide to the Sony A6000.

On this day, March 30th, in 1853, Vincent van Gogh was born. With regard to his posthumous diagnosis of probable bipolar disorder, this date is now celebrated as World Bipolar Day 'to bring world awareness to bipolar disorders and to eliminate social stigma'.

In his book, The Yellow House, Martin Gayford narrates and examines the months van Gogh and Gauguin spent together in Arles and the events which led ultimately to van Gogh admitting himself in 1889 to the asylum St Paul de Mausole. Gayford explains his personal desire to portray Vincent and draws his conclusions about Vincent's illness.

I found the book an interesting and illuminating read.

....concludes my recent publication of his PoW diaries with a final sentence:

"In later life my father liked baking and used to make fruit cake, Suffolk rusks and trifle, although thankfully using more suitable ingredients than those available when he was in the PoW camps."

On May 18th, 2017, the proof copy of my dad's PoW diaries arrived in the post. It was quite a moment to know that they would soon be published more than 70 years after he wrote them and that at last, with the invaluable help of a good friend, I had succeeded in fulfilling my father's own wishes.

n.b. now available on Amazon: paperback/kindle: 'Till We Meet Again: Gunner Bert Martin: 1941 to 1945'
