Harking back to a trip to Finland one year ago. The far north of the country is ablaze with shades of orange and red at this time of year. It is apparently so windy, so often, that trees can't grow high. Instead all the hills are covered with gorse and low lying deciduous bushes.

A strange architectural approach to a pleasure pier? But I'm a big fan of concrete and brutalism, so found it far more arresting than the usual wrought iron filigree affairs.

So, this is one of those mid-afternoon moments, with strong sunbeams cutting through haze, that looks so much more dramatic in high contrast black and white.
