BRANDI DISTERHEFT may not be as flashy and well known as Esperanza Spalding, but they are in the same league. Both play the bass well, sing and possibly even dance, just not on stage. Oscar Peterson had an high opinion of her, when she came on the scene and she keeps the high standard. JUNO Award winner for Traditional Jazz for her Debut album, she is based in New York City and occasionally plays in Toronto. She even writes songs, one which is kind of unusual: "A Letter to the CEO of Goldman Sachs".
Brandi Disterheft brought from NYC her drummer Chris Beck and piano player Anthony Wonsey. Usually she just picks from her friends Toronto musicians.

Singer, songwriter and drummer whose memories go waaaay back. One of the few drummers I know who plays standing up. Leader of a band Thelonious Hank (named after Thelonious Monk and Hank Williams) and singer/ drummer of several other bands. Photo taken at 'Smokeshow', formerly 'Chicken Deli', where Teddy was part of Danny Marks Combo.

Southside Shuffle is a Blues Festival, but one jazz band is tolerated there. 'Dinny & the All Stars' are playing 22 years at the Port Credit town. Silver Elvis appears at many street festivals in and around Toronto. First time I've seen Big Brothers (sign of the times?) who are actually tall Blues Brothers. Abbey plays with many bands and is actually bass player in great demand. The band was leading a parade and Abbey switched to drum on wheels. Abbey Sholzberg has not only played with Elvis, but as a teenager he attended Woodstock. His mother forgave him eventually.

I have seen Colleen Allen playing with many diverse jazz groups and in conversations with many musicians. Obviously she is highly regarded and good friend of many. There is no shortage of great sax players, male or female. She has sometime 5 instruments at her feet and plays them all equally well. I attended first indoor concert in Toronto since January, as I have been away in February and March. I got lucky to get a ticket in Mazzoleni Hall, where capacity was restricted to 50 souls. Fern Lindzon (piano/vocals), Colleen Allen (flute, clarinet, sax), George Koller (bass) and Ethan Ardelli (drums) played concert consisting mainly of Duke Ellington work, finishing with 'Satin Doll'. It was wonderful performance; music and strange experience with all the Covid protocol, pre-registering, distancing, washing, masking, Plexiglas shields and daylight coming in through the windows.

From Belfast, drummer Mark Kelso has made Toronto his home a while ago. He is one of the drummers first asked to be on a gig. He was the head of percussion at Humber College for 15 years. 4 Juno awards speak volumes. Vocalist Renee Lee had picked him for her performance and he played with 'Who is Who' in the jazz scene. (Pat Metheny, Michael Bublé, David Clayton-Thomas, Holly Cole, Larry Coryell, Herbie Hancock, Olivia Newton John, Molly Johnson, Chaka Khan, Danilo Perez, Chris Potter, Bonnie Raitt and the list goes on).
In this evening he played also with Montrealer Taurey Butler - piano, Neil Swainson - bass, Ted Quinlan- guitar.
