The ermine, or stoat, is a remarkable example of adaptability. Its fur changes from white in winter to brown with a striking black tail in summer, allowing it to blend seamlessly into its environment. Agile and swift, ermines navigate effortlessly in search of food, fiercely defending their territories by marking them with urine and body rubbing.
These clever hunters take over burrows originally made by rodents and rabbits, showcasing their resourcefulness. They even line their nests with the fur of their prey, exemplifying their ability to thrive in the wild. The ermine is not just a survivor; it is a symbol of resilience and ingenuity.

As I watched the trail cam footage of the ermine popping up from the snow in various spots, I was struck by their agility, which was reminiscent of the arcade game Whack a Mole. Ermine, ever active and adaptable, are a wonder to behold in all seasons. In winter, they navigate the surface of crusted snow and burrow through soft snow with such grace, occasionally popping their heads above the surface, seemingly to plan their next move.

Imagine this: Herman the Ermine, a rare sight, spotted at 2 a.m. in the chilling -7 degrees of the night forest. The trail cam captured his swift movements, which I slowed down for you to witness. His speed was so rapid that a blink could have made you miss him.

Ermines are carnivorous, eating primarily small mammals such as rodents and rabbits. They are skilled hunters known for their ability to take down prey larger than themselves. Their diet also includes birds, eggs, frogs, and occasionally fish. When food is scarce in the winter, they may also scavenge for carrion.
Their hunting strategy involves stealth and agility. They use their slender bodies to follow prey into burrows or dense vegetation. Ermines are known for their quick reflexes and sharp, precise bites, typically aiming for the neck of their prey. They are opportunistic feeders and may store surplus food for later consumption, especially during the colder months.
Here, Herman the Ermine has found a rotten egg I placed outside for whoever wanted it. First come, first served.
