An awesome sunset over the rangelands of the Ocate volcanic field. I felt like I nearly froze my fingers while taking a ton of different shots of this sunset. It was just me and the cold wind out there...and a few cows and elk here and there.

A ferruginous hawk prepares to take off from a wooden fence post. I shot this from my vehicle on a frigid day in northeast New Mexico. This hawk was very nervous about my presence, and it was difficult to get shots. I had to try to photograph such a magnificent bird, however.

A ferruginous hawk in flight. I shot this from my vehicle on a frigid day in northeast New Mexico. This hawk was very nervous about my presence, and it was difficult to get shots. Ideally, I would have used a faster shutter speed, but I used the relatively fast shutter I already had selected. I only had a few seconds, but I had to try to photograph such a magnificent bird.

(Probably) a sharp-shinned hawk perched on a T post in rural northeast New Mexico, hunting prey before the arrival of the arctic blast. I shot the photo from my car on the adjacent gravel road. (I say probably, because they're difficult to distinguish from Cooper's hawks. This bird was quite small - so small I though it was a kestrel at first when I could only see its silhouette, which is one of the main reasons I think it's a sharp-shinned hawk. Feel free to discuss if you think it's a Cooper's - I'm no bird expert, I just like them.)
