João Gonçalves Zarco was the Portuguese explorer who discovered the island of Madeira in 1420. His memorial statue stands on the Avenida Arriaga in central Funchal. The sides of the marble plinth on which the statue stands are decorated with relief carvings such as the one seen here, showing a navigator holding an astrolabe.

The 18th century Funchal Town Hall stands on the Rua dos Ferreiros where it passes through the Town Hall Square. The arched street-level entrance seen here opens onto the inner courtyard in which stands a marble statue of Leda and the Swan. Coloured decorative tiles (azulejos) line the lower level of the walls.
