The station was built in 1888. In 2024, when the photograph was taken, the former Milwaukee Road station was a stop for Amtrak's Empire Builder and its Midwest Borealis train. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The architecturally embellished octagonal brick tower with a 200,000-gallon steel water tank was built in 1922. The tower stored water until 1954. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Mackinac Bridge connects the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan. The suspension bridge opened in 1957 spans the Straits of Mackinac, connecting Lake Michigan and Lake Huron via Interstate Highway 75.

There have been five British Royal Navy vessels named HMS Welcome, starting in 1642 through World War II. The replica 1774 Sloop Welcome was built during the 1970s and placed on display in Mackinaw City in 1980. By 1990, The Welcome needed major repairs. Over the next decade and a half, the ship was rebuilt. However, by 2014 more major repairs were needed. The engines were removed, and the vessel was placed for static display at the Mackinaw City Marina. The photograph was taken in 2024.
