The Ferry "North Head" is Manly bound from Circular Quay which is at the northern end of the Sydney Central Business District. The ferry is crossing The Heads and is about to pass North Head where Sydney Harbour meets the ocean and Sydney, N.S.W., Australia.

The ferry is named after North Head the Headland which is to the left out of the picture but very near nevertheless!

At this location the ferries are exposed to the vagaries of the open sea and at times the voyages can be quite rough. Several times a year when extreme weather conditions occur, the ferry service has to be cancelled for safety reasons.

The North Head was the last of the traditional ferries to remain in service but was withdrawn in the 1980s.

Any one visiting Sydney should as a must take a trip on the Manly ferry and as the saying goes "seven miles from Sydney and a thousand miles from care."

Urban Transit Authority Ferry "Queenscliff"; arriving at Manly Wharf, Sydney Harbour, Sydney, N.S.W., Australia.

The ferry has just completed its 7 mile voyage (11 kilometres) from Circular Quay (northern end of the Central Business District) of the City of Sydney and will have taken about 33 minutes.

Three ferries of the same design and size run the service and provide a 30 minute frequency from both Manly and Circular Quay. The fourth member of the class is usually in for overhaul and refit but during the peak in the summer months all four ferries will be operating if available.

The "Titan Floating Crane" lifting the ferry Karrabee at Circular Quay, Sydney, N.S.W., Australia.

A few days prior to this, the ferry Karrabee had been a competitor in the Annual Ferry Boat Race. Up to about eight Sydney ferries compete and members of the public can participate by travelling on board.

In 1984 at the end of the race the ferries returned their passengers to the wharves allotted and all had disembarked. A few minutes after the ferry had been unloaded, the vessel sank.

It remained on the bottom for a few days until arrangements could be put in place to refloat it.

One of the largest floating cranes I believe in the world was eventually obtained and the vessel was lifted from the bottom using pumps to eject the water and by use of the crane.

From recollection the ferry went in for a refit and was then returned to service.

However the ferry did not last much longer and was retired in the 1980s. Sadly the Titan Crane was also lost as attempts were made to tow it across the high seas to Asia and it sank before arriving at its destination.

The Sydney Ferries "Karingal, Lady Street and Freshwater at Circular Quay, Sydney, N.S.W., Australia.

The much larger ferry the "Freshwater" is exclusively used on The Circular Quay to Manly service - distance of 7 miles (11 kilometres) and crosses the Heads where the open sea beyond can affect the passage of the vessel.

The other two ferries operate on across the harbour services to wharves on the northern side. They also go to the west under the Sydney Harbour Bridge to other wharves towards the upper reaches of the harbour and the two rivers that flow into it.
