Cats won my heart a great many years ago, and I share that worship of the species with many Flickr friends. A friend passes on his copies of The New Yorker magazine, which I read from cover to cover - excellent in-depth feature articles. But I loved this front cover illustration by R. Kikuo Johnson.

One of the restored fountains at Stetson University College of Law, Gulfport FL. Dating from the 1920s when the college campus was originally an upscale hotel, the fountain celebrates the voyage of Christophe Columbus - whose reputation is less hallowed these days.

The very essence of the Roaring Twenties, captured in this plate that originally appeared in the French publication, Art-Goût-Beauté. After the trials, deprivations and losses of the years of war between 1914-18, the younger generation sloughed off the cultural restrictions of the Victorian era and embraced hedonism with unrestrained gusto. But those pleasures were largely limited to the wealthier members of society.
