Car les murs étaient rongés par les intempéries, les volets fermés et le souffle de désolation voltigeait autour du portail muet."

"En remontant par la route, je regardai pour la dernière fois la colline. D'en bas, on ne voyait que les pins et ses flancs fendillés, broussailleux. Le Greppo était vraiment une île, un lieu inutile et sauvage. À cet instant, j'aurais voulu être déjà loin, repenser à tout cela du sein de ma vie habituelle. "Nous étions dans un autre champ, en compagnie de vaches noires et blanches. Elles nous regardaient tranquillement passer au milieu d'elles et se tournaient avec lenteur comme pour nous montrer la cartographie de leurs flancs gras. Elles nous donnaient à entendre qu'elles nous connaissaient personnellement et en savaient long sur nos familles, et je soulevai mon chapeau devant la dernière en signe d'appréciation."
