There are >170 species of Banksias and I really don't know which one this is!

Banksias are named after Sir Joseph Banks, arriving in Australia in 1770, and the first European to collect specimens, .

The first time I've seen this unusual and fascinating plant, was on a road trip to Perth.

On this trip, we saw fields of this West Australian head turner and, I think, I shot a whole roll of film of this plant, one more beautiful and colourful than the other :)

They grow quite large, 2m - 3m, spreading up to 1m. The colourful foliage is quite rigid and, when shaking the shrub, it rattles :)

I am not sure whether one is supposed to do this. Be it as it may, I couldn't resist :)

Since this tree was not yet in flower, I photographed the flower on a smaller bush in another park. The tree flowers from late October to January (Australian spring to summer months).

... such is life ...

Whitst butterflies are a pest, they become convenient food for predators.

Seen on a short walk at Bremer Bay.

I am not sure what kind of spider this is.
Sent photo to Australian Museum for identification.

To me, if it eats other insects, it is most likely not venomous to humans. Maybe could bite if bothered, but who would bother and annoy spiders? Better to just leave them alone :)

For those venomous ones around the house and in garden sheds, a burst of pesticide spray usually 'does the job'.
